Choosing your plan

Once you have Medicare, you pick how to fill the gaps it leaves. There are two roads, and this is the real decision.

Two ways to fill the gaps

This is the real decision. Neither one is better — they suit different lives.

Medicare Advantage

  • Low or $0 monthly plan premium
  • Drug coverage usually built in
  • Often adds dental, vision or hearing — varies by plan
  • You pay copays as you use care, up to the plan’s yearly in-network maximum
  • You stay inside the plan's Utah network

Fits you if you're healthy now, want predictable low monthly cost, and your doctors are in network.

Medigap (Supplement)

  • Higher monthly premium
  • Little or nothing to pay when you get care, depending on the plan letter
  • Any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare
  • No networks and no referrals
  • Drug coverage bought separately as Part D

Fits you if you travel, see specialists, or want the fewest surprises when you're sick.

Worth knowing: you get a one-time Medigap open enrollment period — six months, starting when your Part B begins — when a company cannot ask health questions or turn you down. After that window, in most situations a Medigap company can decline you for health reasons. Medicare Advantage plans do not ask health questions. This is why the timing of this decision matters more than almost anything else.

Still have questions? That's normal.

Call and ask one question or twenty — any month of the year, not just during enrollment season. There is never a charge, and we won’t put you on a list.
